The Keychron Q1 Pro is one of the best value gasket-mount keyboards money can buy. Full aluminum construction, QMK/VIA support, wireless via Bluetooth 5.1, and hot-swap PCB — all under $200. But like every keyboard kit, it's only the foundation. Getting the most out of it means choosing the right switches, keycaps, and a handful of small extras that make a real difference.
What ships in the box
The Q1 Pro ships with the aluminum case, PCB, sound-dampening foam, and your choice of pre-installed switches (if you buy the switch version) or as a barebones hot-swap kit. It does NOT include keycaps — you'll need to source those separately.
Do you need to buy switches?
If you bought the barebones Q1 Pro, yes — it ships without switches. The PCB is 5-pin hot-swap, so you can install virtually any MX-compatible switch without soldering. Popular choices for the Q1 Pro include Gateron G Pro Yellow (smooth linears, budget), Gateron Oil King (premium linear), or Boba U4T (heavy tactile). If you bought the switch version with Gateron Red or Brown, those work fine out of the box, but many enthusiasts swap them eventually.
Keycaps: what to look for
The Q1 Pro uses a standard 75% layout with a right-side number row. Most keycap sets support it, but double-check that the set includes the specific top-right modifiers. GMK sets are the gold standard but run $130+; Akko and EnjoyPBT offer excellent PBT double-shot or dye-sub sets in the $40–$70 range. Avoid cheap ABS shine-through sets — they look great on day one and feel terrible by month two.
Should you lube the switches?
If you want the keyboard to sound and feel its best, yes. Lubing is optional but makes a bigger difference than almost any other modification. Stock switches straight from a bag can sound scratchy and inconsistent; lubed switches sound smooth, rounded, and uniform. Krytox 205g0 is the go-to for linears; Tribosys 3203 for tactiles (heavier lube dulls the bump). Expect to spend 2–3 hours lubing a full 75% board — there's no shortcut, but it's oddly satisfying.
Stabilizers: do they need work?
The Q1 Pro ships with factory-installed Keychron stabilizers that are decent but not great. The spacebar in particular can rattle on stock units. A quick lube job with dielectric grease on the wire and 205g0 on the housing dramatically tightens them up. If you want to go further, Durock V2 or TX stabilizers are easy drop-in replacements on the PCB and sound noticeably better.
Desk mat and wrist rest
A desk mat protects your desk and keeps the keyboard from sliding. The Q1 Pro is heavy aluminum — it won't move on its own — but a mat still helps with sound dampening and wrist comfort. A wooden wrist rest is the most popular pairing for the Q1 Pro; it matches the keyboard's premium aesthetic and makes long typing sessions more comfortable. Does the Keychron Q1 Pro come with keycaps?

You don't need to use it — the keyboard works great out of the box — but if you want to customize layouts or add productivity shortcuts, it's incredibly powerful and free.
What is the best lube for Keychron Q1 Pro switches?
Krytox 205g0 is the standard recommendation for linear switches on the Q1 Pro — it produces a smooth, thocky sound without feeling mushy. For tactile switches like the Boba U4T, use Tribosys 3203, which is thinner and preserves the tactile bump. Apply lube only to the housing rails and stem legs, not to the top of the stem or the spring (unless you're doing the bag-lube method for springs only).
Does the Keychron Q1 Pro work on Mac and Windows?
Yes. The Q1 Pro ships with both a Mac and Windows key layout, and a physical switch on the bottom of the board toggles between operating systems. The included keycap set covers both layouts. Via QMK/VIA, you can further remap any key for either OS without any hardware changes.
How loud is the Keychron Q1 Pro out of the box?
The Q1 Pro is quieter than most keyboards at its price out of the box thanks to the gasket mount, internal foam, and pre-lubed stabilizers. With clicky switches it remains audible in open offices; with linears or tactiles it's acceptable for most shared spaces. Lubing the switches and adding tape or PE foam under the PCB reduces noise further if required.
Pro tip
Before lubing switches, do a sound test with two or three unlubed switches to get a baseline. Then lube and install those same switches and compare. The difference is immediately obvious and will motivate you through the rest of the board. Use a small paintbrush — a size 0 or 00 — and apply lube thinly. More is not better; over-lubed linears sound mushy.
