How much does a home gym cost to set up?

A functional barbell home gym costs $1,200–$2,000: a squat stand or rack ($300–$700), an Olympic barbell ($200–$400), 300lbs of bumper or iron plates ($400–$700), and a bench ($150–$300). You can go cheaper with used plates from Facebook Marketplace. Adding flooring, safety arms, and storage runs another $200–$500.

What's the minimum equipment for a useful home gym?

A power rack (or sturdy squat stand with safety arms), a 20kg Olympic barbell rated for at least 700lbs, and 200–300lbs of plates. With those three things you can do every major compound lift. A flat bench is the next purchase. Adjustable dumbbells are optional but high-leverage if your space is small.

Do I need flooring under a squat rack?

Yes — both to protect the floor and to dampen noise when you drop weights. 3/4-inch horse stall mats from Tractor Supply ($45–$60 per 4'×6' mat) are the gold standard. Stack two layers under the deadlift platform if your floor is suspended (apartment, second story, or wood subfloor over joists).

Power rack or squat stand — which should I get?

Squat stands are cheaper and take less space, but you need spotter arms for safety when lifting alone. Power racks (4 uprights instead of 2) are safer because the safety pins fully catch a missed lift, and they support pull-ups, attachments, and band pegs. If you have ceiling height (8'+) and floor space (4'×8'+), get a rack. If you don't, a squat stand with proper spotter arms is fine.

What ceiling height do I need for a home gym?

Minimum 7'6" to overhead press a barbell with a 5'10" lifter. 8' is comfortable. 9'+ lets you do pull-ups on a rack-mounted bar with full extension. If you have less than 7'6", you'll be limited to seated overhead pressing, which is workable but constraining.

How much weight should my barbell hold?

A real Olympic barbell is rated for 1,000–1,500lbs static load and tested to a much higher dynamic load. Cheap big-box barbells are often rated for 300lbs and bend permanently above that. Spend at least $200 on a barbell from a known brand (Rogue, Rep Fitness, Titan, Vulcan) — it's the one piece of equipment you'll never replace.

Can I get a good workout without a barbell?

Yes. Adjustable dumbbells (PowerBlock, Bowflex SelectTech, Nuobell) plus a bench cover most strength training. Add a pull-up bar and a set of resistance bands and you can train every muscle group well. The barbell is the best tool for max strength and progressive overload, but it's not required for hypertrophy or general fitness.
