The Breville Barista Express is one of the best entry points into home espresso — it has a built-in conical burr grinder that eliminates a major barrier to getting started. But the machine itself is only part of the picture. To pull consistently great shots, you'll need a few key accessories that Breville doesn't include.

The Barista Express ships with a single and double wall (pressurized) portafilter basket, a basic tamper, a milk jug, a cleaning disc, and a water filter. Notably absent: a proper tamping mat, a distribution tool, and a scale.

Do you need a separate grinder?

No — and that's the whole point of this machine. The integrated conical burr grinder is one of the best built-in grinders on any prosumer espresso machine under $1,000. You adjust grind size with a dial on the front and dose directly into the portafilter. That said, the grinder maxes out around 60g per minute, so if you're pulling shots back-to-back for a household, it can be a little slow. For most home users it's perfectly adequate, and skipping a standalone grinder saves $200–$400.

What tamper size does it take?

The Barista Express uses a 54mm portafilter, which is non-standard — most prosumer machines use 58mm. The included tamper is functional but has a plastic handle and tends to wobble, making it hard to tamp evenly. Upgrading to a calibrated 54mm tamper (like the Normcore V4) makes a meaningful difference to shot consistency. Calibrated tampers stop at a set pressure (typically 30lbs) so you always tamp with the same force.

Why you need a scale

Espresso is a ratio game. A standard double shot uses 18g of ground coffee and should yield 36g of liquid espresso in about 25–30 seconds. Without a scale, you're guessing — and even a 2g difference in your dose or yield can flip a shot from balanced to bitter or sour. A compact scale that fits under the portafilter (the Acaia Lunar or the more affordable Timemore Black Mirror Basic) is one of the highest-leverage accessories you can buy. Look for one with a 0.1g resolution and a built-in timer.

Milk frothing essentials

The Barista Express has a steam wand capable of producing microfoam suitable for latte art if your technique is good. You'll need a proper stainless milk jug — a 12oz jug for single lattes, 20oz for larger drinks or batching. A basic thermometer helps while you're learning the feel of the wand. One common mistake: the steam wand on the Barista Express is single-hole, so steam output is lower than commercial machines. Let the boiler heat up fully (at least 30 seconds after the ready light comes on) before steaming.

Cleaning and maintenance

The Barista Express requires regular backflushing with the included cleaning disc and Breville's cleaning tablets (or the generic equivalent). Do this every 1–2 weeks, or after about 200 shots. The grinder burrs should be cleaned with a brush every month and replaced every 1–2 years depending on use. The steam wand tip needs purging and wiping after every use — milk residue bakes on and blocks the hole fast. Descale the machine every 2–3 months with Breville's descaler or a citric acid solution.
