Elegoo Saturn 3 Ultra

Everything you need to start printing with your Elegoo Saturn 3 Ultra

The Elegoo Saturn 3 Ultra is one of the best large-format resin printers available. 12K mono LCD, 218×123×260mm build volume, and a tilt-screen release mechanism that's gentler on large prints. But resin printing has a completely different supply list than FDM — and safety is non-negotiable.

What ships in the box

The Saturn 3 Ultra ships with the printer, a metal build plate, a resin vat with pre-installed FEP film, a starter bottle of Elegoo resin, USB drive with slicer, and basic tools including gloves and a spatula.

Safety is non-negotiable

Uncured photopolymer resin is toxic. It's a skin and respiratory irritant, and long-term exposure is associated with sensitization reactions. Always wear nitrile gloves when handling liquid resin or freshly printed parts. A respirator or N95 mask is important when pouring or washing. Work in a ventilated area — a window open with a fan exhausting outward is the minimum. Don't skip PPE because you're only doing a quick print.

Wash and cure station

Freshly printed resin parts must be washed in isopropyl alcohol (99% IPA) to remove uncured resin from the surface, then cured under UV light to harden fully. You can do this manually with a jar of IPA and a UV flashlight, but a dedicated wash and cure station makes the process cleaner, faster, and more consistent. The Elegoo Mercury Plus is purpose-built for Saturn-sized prints.

FEP film replacement

The FEP film at the bottom of the resin vat is a consumable. It gets cloudy and scratched over time, which causes print failures and poor surface quality. Expect to replace it every 2–4 liters of resin printed. Replacement FEP sheets are inexpensive ($10–$15 for a pack) — keep some on hand from day one.

Resin selection

Not all resins are the same. Standard ABS-like resins are fine for most hobby use. Water-washable resins can replace IPA for cleaning (but still require PPE — wet resin is still toxic). For miniatures, Siraya Tech Fast or Phrozen Aqua Gray produce excellent detail. For engineering parts that need impact resistance, look at Siraya Tech Blu or Elegoo Engineering Resin.

IPA management

Used IPA full of dissolved resin can be cured in sunlight — the UV exposure polymerizes the resin and turns it into a solid that can be disposed of as regular solid waste. Pour contaminated IPA into a clear container, leave it in direct sunlight for a day, and the solid settles out. Liquid waste should never go down the drain. This process makes IPA last significantly longer and is better for the environment.

Frequently asked questions

Is resin printing safe?

Yes, with proper precautions. Uncured resin is a skin irritant and toxic if ingested or chronically inhaled. Cured resin is generally inert and safe to handle. The key rules: gloves always, ventilation always, don't dump IPA or liquid resin down the drain. Many thousands of people print resin safely daily.

What resin should I start with on the Saturn 3 Ultra?

Elegoo ABS-Like Resin is the natural starting point — it's pre-configured in the Chitubox profiles for the Saturn 3, inexpensive, and forgiving. Once you're comfortable with the process, Siraya Tech Fast and Phrozen resins offer better detail and finish quality.

How often do I need to replace the FEP?

Generally every 2–4 liters of resin, or when you notice cloudiness or scratches on the film. Print failures on the build plate (print stays on FEP instead of lifting) are often the first sign of FEP degradation. Keep 2–3 sheets on hand.

Can I use Chitubox with the Elegoo Saturn 3 Ultra?

Yes. Both Chitubox and Elegoo's own Voxeldance Tango slicer work with the Saturn 3 Ultra. Chitubox has a larger community and more preset profiles. Tango is Elegoo's current recommended slicer and is free.

How long does a resin print take on the Saturn 3 Ultra?

Print time depends on height, not surface area — the Saturn 3 Ultra's 12K screen cures an entire layer at once regardless of how many objects are on the plate. A typical layer takes 2–3 seconds of exposure plus 3–5 seconds of lift/drop cycle. A 5cm tall model with 50-micron layers (1,000 layers) takes approximately 1.5–2.5 hours. Taller prints scale linearly — a 10cm print takes twice as long as a 5cm print.

Do I need a dedicated space for resin printing?

Yes. Resin printing requires ventilation due to VOCs from uncured photopolymer resin — a room with a window you can open, or a fan exhausting air outdoors, is the minimum. Many users dedicate a garage, basement, or outdoor shed. Working near air conditioning return vents or inside cars without airflow is dangerous. A UV-blocking cover or blackout curtain is also useful since ambient UV light (sunlight through windows) can prematurely cure resin in your vat.

What is the best resin for miniatures on the Saturn 3 Ultra?

Siraya Tech Fast Navy Grey and Phrozen Aqua Gray 8K are the two most popular resins for miniature printing on large-format MSLA printers. Both produce excellent detail reproduction and work reliably with standard exposure settings. Siraya Tech Fast is slightly more forgiving for beginners; Phrozen Aqua Gray offers finer detail. Mix a small amount of Siraya Tech Blu (10–20%) into standard resins for significantly improved impact resistance on thin parts like spears and sword blades.

Pro tip

Print a calibration matrix before your first real model. The Ameralabs Town test print (free on Printables) takes 20 minutes and tells you if your exposure settings are correct. Over-exposure causes bloom and loss of fine detail; under-exposure causes layer separation and failed prints. Getting exposure right for your specific resin on day one saves hours of troubleshooting.
